AB MYTHS AND MAGIC
Scarsdale, NY -
"I train my abs every day but I don't seem to be making any progress!" This is a lament that fitness pro Brad Schoenfeld hears on an almost daily basis. In the new issue of Let's Live magazine, he sets the record straight. "When you train intensely, you're breaking down muscle, not building it up," he says. "It's during rest where you're body repairs the damaged muscle tissue. This is how muscles develop."
But what about the claim that the abs are endurance muscle? "Hogwash," says Schoenfeld. "The abs are like any other muscle group. They have the same fiber type composition as the biceps and quads. The notion that they need more frequent work simply isn't supported by science."
So how often should you train the abs? According to Schoenfeld, you need at least two full days rest between ab training sessions. "It takes about 48 hours for muscles to fully recover," he says. "If you short change recuperation, you shortchange results."
Please contact Brad Schoenfeld to arrange an interview and/or for additional quotes.
