THE BEST 20 MINUTE WORKOUT EVER!
Scarsdale, NY -
Each year, the average American over age 30 gains body fat. This is largely attributed to the fact that most lose about one percent of their muscle mass annually. But according to expert personal trainer Brad Schoenfeld, it doesn't have to be this way. Schoenfeld tells Bottom Line Health magazine that with a minimal time investment, muscle wasting can be reversed, helping to maintain a lean, toned physique. "Just two or three strength training sessions a week is all that's needed to increase and maintain muscle," he says. "Even a twenty-minute session is sufficient to produce significant results."
Schoenfeld acknowledges many people will be skeptical that results can be achieved in so little time, but he insists it can be done. "The key is to train with a high level of effort," he says. "I'm not saying you can look like a fitness model, but you can reinvent your physique." And he claims you'll also see a host of other benefits. "Improved bone density, high HDL levels, better posture...I can go on and on. Lifting weights confers so many positive effects on health and well being it's amazing."
How should someone who's never trained begin a program? "Start slowly," cautions Schoenfeld. "You need to acclimate your body to the stresses of lifting. But after a few weeks, you should be able to push yourself more and more. Choose weights that are heavy enough so that the last repetition of a set is difficult to complete. Once the last rep is easy, it's time to move up to a slightly heavier weight."
