BOUNCE YOUR WAY TO FIRM ABS

Scarsdale, NY - No piece of exercise equipment has gotten more hype than the stability ball. Entire books have been devoted to using this piece of equipment and the various exercises that can be performed on it. But Brad Schoenfeld tells Fitness Rx for Women magazine that it isn't the be-all end-all of exercise equipment. "When you train on the stability ball, the core is forced to assume a greater amount of the work," he says. "While that's good for core development, there is an associated reduction in force output by other muscles. So if you're looking to development the shoulders, back, chest or arms, you're results are probably going to be suboptimal."

That said, Schoenfeld is a big fan of using the stability ball for core training. "The evidence for working the abs and other core muscles is pretty compelling," he says. "Some studies show as much as fifty percent greater muscle activity when the crunch is performed on a stability ball as opposed to the floor."

What's the best strategy for toning up the abs? "A combination of stable and unstable surface training generally works best," Schoenfeld says. "Perform some of your ab exercises on the stability ball and some on the floor or with machines. From a muscle development standpoint, this combination should produce maximal results."
