EXERCISE AS AN ANTI-DEPRESSANT
Scarsdale, NY -
Depression is a potentially debilitating disease that affects millions of people and costs the country billions. The usual course of treatment is for physician's to prescribe medication. However, another treatment is now making it's way into the medical mainstream: exercise!
In the current issue of Senior Magazine, fitness expert Brad Schoenfeld details the benefits of exercise as an alternative therapy for those who are depressed. "Studies clearly show that exercise can be as effective as medication in the treatment of mild to moderate depression," Schoenfeld states. "Best of all there are no side-effects."
What is so special about exercise in elevating mood. "There are several hypothesis," Schoenfeld says. "Some think it's due to an increase in endorphins, which are brain chemicals that provide the 'exercise high.' There is also an improvement in sleeping patterns which can help to enhance state of mind. And there's also the theory that it provides an outlet where a person can escape from their daily troubles."
You don't need to exercise a lot to derive benefits. "Several days a week of regimented training will have a significant impact on improving mood. And it doesn't have to be intense exercise. Even walking has been shown to be beneficial."
Schoenfeld says he's making it his personal cause to raise awareness on the topic. "If more people would embrace exercise as treatment, we not only would have a healthier and happier society, but we'd realize billions in savings. It's a win/win all around."
Please contact Brad Schoenfeld to arrange an interview and/or for additional quotes.
