Can You Eat Healthy at a Restaurant?

Scarsdale, NY - Eating out is one of the biggest reasons people don't stick with their diets. But according to fitness expert Brad Schoenfeld, this doesn't have to be the case. "Restaurants most often base their menus on the taste of the food, not on its healthfulness," he tells Muscle Media magazine. "They want to please your palate and most of the time things that please your palate are fatty and sugary."

Schoenfeld advises that you choose foods that are nutritionally dense but not dense in calories, such as leafy green vegetables. "Greens veggies are basically like green water," he says. "Salad greens, broccoli, spinach - all of these foods are fibrous so they have a lot of bulk yet are low in calories. They'll fill you up and decrease the amount of higher calorie foods you'll take in the rest of the time you're at the restaurant."

Schoenfeld says that if something isn't on the menu, don't be afraid to ask for it. Most of the time, restaurants are more than willing to accomodate. "As far as starchy carbohydrates, my rule is 'think brown'. If you want bread with the meal, ask for brown breads such as whole wheat or pumpernickel. Instead of having white rice, opt for brown rice. Rather than having a regular potato, order yams."
