High Protein Diet Myths
Scarsdale, NY -
No nutritional topic seems to spark greater debate than that of high protein diets. In the current issue of American Health and Fitness magazine, renowned fitness expert Brad Schoenfeld dispels some of the more common myths associated with the subject. "There is a great deal of misinformation being propagated," he says, "and unfortuately much of it has been accepted as gospel."
Schoenfeld claims the threat to kidney damage is overblown. "There is zero research showing that otherwise healthy individuals have increased risk of kidney problems from a high protein diet. The studies often cited in support of this contention were performed on those with existing renal disease. Based on a large body of evidence, there is no correlation between healthy and diseased states."
Schoenfeld also disputes the contention that high protein diets result in the intake of unhealthy saturated fats. "There's no reason that protein consumption has to come from fatty red meats. Lean poultry, fish and egg whites are all replete in protein and very low in saturated fats," he says. "It's all about making the proper choices."
According to Schoenfeld, those who are involved in exercise need more protein. "The RDA for protein is based on the needs of sedentary couch potatoes," he says. "If you exercise intensely, you need about double the protein in the RDA. Some newer methods of assessment indicate you might even need even more than that."
