How to Overcome Holiday Exercise Excuses
Scarsdale, NY -
Schedules get squeezed around the holidays, making it difficult to stick with a fitness routine. But if you abandon your training routine during this season it can often be very difficult to pick it up again after the New Year. Fitness pro Brad Schoenfeld shares his tips to avoid this pratfall in the current issue of Parents magazine.
The key to staying the course is to modify your routine so you at least maintain a semblance of a workout schedule. "You can cut exercise time by increasing workout intensity," Schoenfeld says. "For example, run two miles instead of three but clock eight-minute miles instead of your usual ten."
Schoenfeld suggests splitting up a workout into smaller chunks of time if necessary. "If you can't perform 45 minutes at a clip, try to get in three 15-minute bouts. Studies show results are comparable provided intensity is equal."
Don't get down if you slip up and only get in a workout or two in a week. "You might not make improvements," Schoenfeld says, "but you won't regress, either. And once you get past the holidays, you'll be able to pick up where you left off and be on your way to a better body."
