MEAL REPLACEMENTS AID IN WEIGHT LOSS

Scarsdale, NY - Can adding meal replacements to your nutritional regimen aid in weight loss? "Yes," says fitness expert and sports nutritionist, Brad Schoenfeld, in the current issue of Whole Life Times magazine. "Assuming you keep total calories below a maintenance level, meal replacements have several benefits for the dieter."

One of the main benefits is hunger control. "Meal replacements contain good amounts of protein," Schoenfeld professes. "What many people don't realize is that protein promotes satiety. By elevating certain hormones, your body sends signals to the brain that you're full. Bottom line is that you end up eating less and that's the key to losing weight."

Schoenfeld also claims that meal replacements can help to spare muscle. "When your dieting, the body tends to cannibalize muscle protein for fuel. This causes your metabolism to drop, and ultimately leads to a weight loss plateau. By consuming protein-rich meal replacements, your body is less apt to draw upon its muscle for fuel, keeping your metabolic rate elevated."

Schoenfeld cautions that meal replacements aren't magic formulas to boost muscle. "The body can only utilize so much protein for muscle building purposes. Once you reach this critical limit, any additional protein is simply excreted or even stored as fat."
