MCTs for Fat Loss?

Scarsdale, NY - Can consuming a certain type of fat actually help to lose weight? According to fitness expert Brad Schoenfeld, the answer is a qualified "yes." In the current issue of Ironman magazine, Schoenfeld says that medium chain triglycerides - a.k.a. MCTs - can be a beneficial supplement, especially if you're looking to shed those last few pounds. "Studies have shown that when MCTs are substituted for either saturated fats or carbs on a calorie-for-calorie basis, the body actually stores less fat."

Schoenfeld says MCTs also can help to reduce hunger. "Research shows they help promote a feeling of fullness, which leads to a reduction in the total number of calories consumed. This has a positive indirect impact on fat loss." The catch to seeing results, however, is that MCTs must be substituted for other calories in the diet. "If you don't cut out an equal number of calories from other nutrients, you will actually gain fat from the increased caloric intake. You can't belie the first Law of Thermodynamics!"

MCTs are not without potential side effects, however. "MCTs can be harsh on the digestive system and can potentially cause gastric upset," he says. "It's best to consume them with a food source and consumption of more than 30 grams of MCTs a day."
