Muscle Up!

Scarsdale, NY - Most men - and a fair number of women, too - desire a muscular body. But what's the best way to achieve this goal? In the current issue of Exercise and Health magazine, renowned personal trainer Brad Schoenfeld dishes his secrets to packing on mass.

Schoenfeld dispels the notion that you need to be genetically gifted to attain a hard body. "Genetics certainly will affect a person's propensity to bulk up," he says, "but everyone has the capacity to to develop a strong, muscular physique, provided they utilize a proper training approach."

According to Schoenfeld, intensity of effort is the most important factor in muscling up. "The reason most people don't get bigger is simply that they don't train hard enough. You need to progressively challenge your muscles beyond their present capacity if you want to see results. Otherwise, the body has no impetus to change."

For those who think you need to be a gym rat and train for hours a day, Schoenfeld says to think again. "It's the quality, not the quantity, of training that produces results. A few hours a week is all that's needed as long as you are training smart."
