No Sleeves, No Problem

Scarsdale, NY - Feeling a little leery about shouldering this season's tank tops, halters and spaghetti straps despite all that upper-body oomph you've been putting into your workouts? In the new issue of Self magazine, best-selling fitness author Brad Schoenfeld has just the antidote. "The truth is, most women work out their bodies in such a haphazard fashion that it's virtually impossible to achieve satisfactory results," he says. "If you choose your moves incorrectly, you run the risk of overlap, decreased efficiency and, ultimately, stagnation."

Schoenfeld outlines a routine that incorporates classic exercises in new, effective combinations. "The idea is to target different aspects of the upper body muscles," he says. "This involves training from a variety of angles. For example, if you perform and overhead triceps extension you'll target the long head of the triceps, while an exercise like triceps dips works more of the medial and lateral triceps heads."

Schoenfeld says the most important thing is to have a game plan. "Go into the gym knowing exactly what exercises you're going to perform. This ensures optimal workout efficiency."
