Overcoming Exercise Plateaus
Scarsdale, NY -
Nothing can derail a person's motivation to train more than an exercise plateau. After all, who wants to put in all that sweat and effort if nothing happens? In the current issue of Musclemag, fitness expert Brad Schoenfeld details tried-and-true strategies for avoiding workout plateaus and sustaining consistent progress.
"One of the biggest reasons for a plateau is that people simply train too much," Schoenfeld says. "When you train intensely, you're breaking down muscle tissue. If you don't allow for adequate recuperation, you're bound to become overtrained and results come to a crashing halt."
Schoenfeld also cites a lack of variety as a primary reason for stagnation. "Variety is the spice of fitness," he says. "You should strive to constantly perform different exercises that work your muscles from different angles. This will ensure optimal stimulation of the neuromuscular system."
Schoenfeld says that it's essential to have a game plan. "You must go into a workout knowing exactly what you're going to do that day. Otherwise, you ultimately end up wasting time and impairing the quality of your routine."
