STRENGTH TRAINING IS RIGHT FOR DANCERS!

Scarsdale, NY - "Pumping iron" isn't a phrase usually associated with dancing. But according to fitness pro Brad Schoenfeld, strength training can provide dancers with a multitude of benefits. "When your muscles are strong," Schoenfeld tells Dance Teacher magazine, "they're better able to withstand pressure and you can improve muscular endurance."

Schoenfeld says it's important to consider the principle of specificity when designing a workout. This involves performing moves that mimic those you normally perform. "By nature, dancers rely on their lower body to execute movements, so improving strength and endurance is vital," he says. "But if you're working with a partner and have to perform lifts, then upper body strength will be vital."

As far as specifics, Schoenfeld says a combination of lifting weights and performing plyometric movements generally work best. "Lifting weights in different repetition ranges will target various components of strength and endurance, while plyometrics develop power. The exact combination will depend on the style of dance you practice."
