Stretching Your Potential
Scarsdale, NY -
Stretching is the most overlooked component of a fitness routine. But in-demand personal trainer Brad Schoenfeld tells Musclemag this is misguided. Schoenfeld is quoted as saying that stretching isn't just a tool to increase flexibility. "Adding joint mobility can actually improve your weight lifting routine. By maintaining greater joint elasticity, you're able to train through a greater range of motion, which can improve muscular contractility."
Schoenfeld says stretching even enhances the potential for muscular growth. "Muscles are encased in a fibrous tissue called fascia. There is a school of thought that increasing the pliancy of this tissue can allow the muscles to expand past where the might otherwise be able to grow."
As for preventing injuries, Schoenfeld says that's not as clear cut as people might believe. "There certainly is some evidence that improving flexibility can reduce injury potential. However, this really depends on your initial flexibility level and the type of activities you perform." He adds that stretching before a workout won't prevent injury. "There's no evidence that pre-workout stretching helps to offset injury potential. It's the cumulative effects of stretching-related improvements in flexibility that are important in this regard."
