Most consumer-oriented diet books are, to be kind, less than scientifically-based. The vast majority rely on gimmickry and hype, taking kernels of science and extrapolating them into non-sensible theories that have little physiologic credence. Not so with, The Body Fat Solution: 5 Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscle, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight, by Tom Venuto.
The Body Fat Solution takes a refreshingly honest approach in detailing the best ways to shed body fat and, most importantly, keep it off over the long haul. Venuto rebuts various myths associated with some of the more popular diet theories including that you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight (it's a physiologic impossibility that flies in the face of Newton's First Law of Thermodynamics), carbs make you fat (it's the overconsumption of calories, not carbs, that induces weight gain), and that genetics are responsible for the inability to lose fat (virtually everyone can achieve a lean physique if they commit to taking the proper course of action).
This is not a diet book, per se. Rather, it endeavors to provide a blueprint for dietary success. Venuto promotes a balanced approach to food consumption. He counsels on the importance of monitoring calories in versus calories out. There are no unsubstantiated claims about needing to cut out entire food groups; just straightforward advice on the benefits of consuming the right types of all macronutrients in moderation.
Just as importantly, The Body Fat Solution discusses how to personalize a nutritional regimen based on individual needs. He delves into the physical, emotional, mental, and sociologic aspects of food consumption and how they impact weight management. It's all extremely well articulated.
I was especially impressed that the book stresses the benefits of exercise - particularly strength training - in optimizing body composition. Study after study shows that exercise is all-but-essential for long-term weight management. Without exercise, metabolism slows, weight loss plateaus, and people end up on the dietary rollercoaster that ultimately ends in a progressively greater accumulation of body fat. Venuto understands the importance of increasing lean muscle during a fat loss regimen, and provides sound advice on how to integrate exercise into one's daily lifestyle.
In sum, The Body Fat Solution is one of the best consumer-oriented nutritional books I've read. Written in a user-friendly sytle that does not require a scientific background to comprehend, it refrains from gimmicks and details in-depth information on achieving lasting weight loss. Highly recommended!
