Supplement Reviews
Colostrum
What it is: Colostrum is the breast milk obtained from cows within several days after the mother has given birth.
What it does: Colostrum is purported to increase exercise performance and muscle mass, and potentially improve immune function.
Verdict: Research on colostrum has produced mixed results. Some studies have reported improvements in exercise performance while others have failed to show benefits. Overall, there appears to be a trend toward modest enhancement of high-intensity aerobic performance and perhaps some increases in lean body mass (although this is by no means certain). The mechanisms by which colostrums imparts these benefits is unclear at this point. Colostrum is rich in insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) which have effects on muscle protein synthesis, but given that IGFs are polypeptides it would stand to reason that they would break down in the gut when consumed orally. Further research is needed to identify the potential mechanisms of action and perhaps hone the supplement for better results. There also is some evidence that colostrums can be beneficial in improving immune function after high intensity exercise. This seems logical since colostrum contains immunoglobulins (i.e. antibodies) which help to fight infection. Immunoglobulins are resistant to enzymes and thus would conceivable be able to withstand the acidic environment of the digestive system after consumption. On the downside, intake of 10 to 60 grams a day for up to 4 weeks may be necessary to see benefits. At a cost of $50 a week or more, supplementation can get quite expensive and given the modest potential benefits, the cost/benefit might not be favorable.
