Since publication of the first edition more than a decade ago,
Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning has always been a terrific resource for the fitness professional as well as anyone who wants to understand the complexities of exercise. The Third Edition expands on previous editions and furthers its standing as a definitive guide. Edited by Thomas Baechle and Roger Earle, the book draws on the expertise of thirty of the most renowned exercise physiologists to delve into the science of strength training and conditioning and athletic performance.
The book is divided into five sections that explore the structure and function of body systems, adaptations to training, exercise testing and evaluation, exercise technique, and program design. This is done in a comprehensive and logical fashion, progressing from the rudiments of physiology to advanced training concepts. The material is supported by peer reviewed research that is meticulously documented. There is even a section providing strategies for the administration of gyms and other exercise facilities.
In sum, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is an excellent resource for those who want the real science behind exercise. Understand, though, that this is not a consumer oriented text. Those who do not have at least some background in science might find the material daunting. But if you truly want to learn about strength and conditioning, there is no better place to start.
