Fish Oil

What it is: Fish oil is derived from the fat stores of oily, cold water fish.

What it does: Fish oil is purported to have numerous health-related benefits on many of the body's organ systems. It also is thought to aid in fat loss.

Verdict: Fish oil has shown to have significant effects on reducing various cardiovascular disorders. A large body of evidence shows that it helps to protect against both cardiovascular mortality and morbity, with positive effects shown on cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and triglyceride levels. There also is a good deal of evidence that fish oil has neuroprotective effects, reducing the incidence of brain diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's as well as having a positive impact on depression. Studies also seem to indicate that fish oil might have anti-cancer effects, particularly in carcinomas of the breast, colorectal, prostate, and pancreas. And fish oil has been shown to help increase activity of fat burning enzymes, decrease the activity of fat storage enzymes, and improve insulin function, thereby aiding in fat loss and weight management. Other potential health benefits that warrant further study include alleviation of inflammatory diseases and arthritis, improved immune function, and the treatment of various skin disorders. We may be just scratching the surface as to the wide-ranging benefits of fish oil consumption on health and well being.

Side Effects: In high dosages, fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding.
