Glucosamine

What it is: Glucosamine is a combination of an amino acid (glutamine) and a sugar (glucose) that occurs naturally in the body.

What it does: Glucosamine acts as a precursor to proteoglycans-a hydrophyllic (i.e. water-attracting) compound that helps to provide lubrication in the joints. It also purportedly helps your body to manufacture of collagen, the protein component of a fibrous substance that holds your joints together. Collagen is the primary constituent of "articular" cartilage, the shock-absorbing tissue that covers and protects the ends of your body joints. Loss of this cartilage is responsible for the symptoms associated with arthritis.

Verdict: A large number of clinical trials have shown glucosamine to be effective in the management of joint pain and osteoarthritis. Best results have been noted in people who are mildly to moderately arthritic-more so than many commonly prescribed painkillers. Significant improvements are seen after several months of use. It is still unclear as to whether there is any benefit to supplementation by those who are asymptomatic. It seems to have even greater benefit when combined with chondroitin, and many joint formulas use a combination of the two supplements. In sum, those suffering from joint pain and arthritis should consider giving glucosamine a try, preferably in a supplement containing chondroitin.

Side effects: There is some question that glucosamine might raise blood sugar levels in diabetics, but this has not been substantiated clinically. Otherwise, there are no known adverse reactions.
