Supplement Reviews
Glycerol
What it is: Glycerol is a naturally occurring metabolite of glucose that forms the backbone of triglycerides.
What it does: Glycerol is purported to bind fluid in the body, creating a "hyperhydration" effect.
Verdict: Fluid loss during exercise reduces the volume of blood plasma, resulting in an associated decrease in the amount of blood pumped from the heart (i.e. stroke volume). The body compensates by increasing heart rate to maintain cardiac output. The end result is that the heart has to work harder to accomplish the same amount of work. Moreover, when exercising in hot conditions, the increase in heart rate can be insufficient to offset the reduced stroke volume and performance is negatively affected. Glycerol supplementation has been shown to expand plasma volume, thereby delaying the negative effects of fluid loss. Specifically, the hyperhydration associated with glycerol supplementation is most beneficial in endurance activities carried out in hot and humid conditions where it is difficult to replace fluids during the event, particularly for high-level athletes. Conceivably, this can have a positive effect on aerobic performance and reduce cardiac strain during extended bouts of exercise.
