Probiotics

What it is: Probiotics are a "good" form of bacteria that beneficial effects on the digestive tract. The two major types are bifidobacterium bifidum and lactobacillus acidophilus.

What it does: Probiotics are purported to reduce cholesterol, improve immune function, maintain digestive health, and prevent colon cancer.

Verdict: Research has shown that human body requires a healthy population of "good" bacteria to maintain digestive health. These bacteria aid in metabolizing the foods we eat and help to supplant "bad" bacteria and yeast that promote disease. A decrease in their quantity can impair metabolism and allow harmful bacteria to flourish, potentially leading to illness. Moreover, studies in both humans and animals have shown a definitive link between consumption of probiotics on immune function, resulting in a greater resistance to invading organisms and a reduction in viral and bacterial infections. The link between probiotic intake and colon cancer, which less clear, is compelling nevertheless. Studies in vitro (i.e. test tube) and on lab rats seem to indicate that probiotics have a protective effect on colorectal carcinomas. Realize, though, that concrete data on human subjects is still lacking. So although early results seem promising, further research needs to be conducted before a definitive conclusion can be reached on the matter. The good news: Since probiotics are resistant to both stomach acid and bile, they are able survive transit through the gastrointestinal tract after consumption and thus are effective in supplement form. If you don't regularly consume ample quantities of cultured yogurt, supplementation with probiotics should be considered. When choosing a probiotic supplement, make sure it is as fresh as possible. The live cells have a fairly short shelf life and their activity ceases quickly after the product reaches its expiration date. No significant side effects have been reported in healthy subjects, but those with stomach disorders might experience negative side effects.
