Pyruvate

What it is: Pyruvate is an end product from glucose metabolism.

What it does: Given that pyruvate is metabolite of glucose breakdown, supplementation with pyruvate is purported to increase the body's ability to generate energy at the cellular level, improving muscular endurance and reducing fatigue. Most notably, it also is marketed as a weight loss aid.

Verdict: Evidence as to pyruvate's effectiveness as a weight loss aid is scant. Although several studies have shown a small increases in weight loss with pyruvate supplementation (several pounds) over a control group, the studies themselves must be taken in proper context. For one, sample sizes have been very small, most with fewer than 20 subjects. What's more, the studies in question have used massive dosages of pyruvate to achieve results-anywhere from 25 to 40 grams!-which is much higher than what people would normally consume (suggested dosage is generally 2 to 3 grams per day.). Given that pyruvate is quite expensive, and given that at best upside is minimal, the cost/benefit simply isn't worth it. In sum, if weight loss is your goal, save your money and pass on pyruvate.

Side effects: Other than mild gastrointestinal discomfort, there have been no significant side effects reported from supplementation with pyruvate.
