Ribose
What it is: Ribose is a five carbon sugar (i.e. a pentose) that is a component in the formation of ATP-the high-energy compound that fuels cellular work.
What it does: It is theorized that by increasing levels of ATP, ribose helps to elevate energy levels, improve exercise performance, and enhance exercise recovery.
Verdict: Ribose seems to improve cardiac function and exercise tolerance in those suffering from ischemic heart disease. This has been shown fairly conclusively in the research. However, in otherwise healthy individuals, there is little evidence to indicate that ribose has any tangible exercise-related benefits, even at high levels of intake. In fact, one study actually showed a reduced training effect in those consuming ribose as compared with a placebo. The problem with the theory for supplementation appears to be that a reduction of the ATP pool is not a limiting factor in exercise performance. Thus, while ribose might help to regenerate ATP after intense training, it doesn't translate into results in the gym.
Bottom line: There is little evidence that ribose will do much to improve exercise performance or body composition in healthy individuals. Given that it is quite expensive, there is a poor cost/benefit for its use. Other than those suffering from ischemic heart disease or related illness, it is not recommended.
