The Versa Bell from Stamina Products is an dumbbell set (also known as "selectorized dumbbells"). For those who aren't familiar with the concept, selectorized dumbbells are basically all-in-one units that, with the turn of a knob, allow you to change the amount of weight used and thereby negate the need for storing a large, bulky set of dumbbells. By all accounts, the product delivers on its promises.
Upon first inspection, the Versa Bells proved themselves to be user-friendly. Take them out of their colorful box and they're ready to use - no assembly required. It's a good-looking product that is highly functional.
Quality of workmanship is excellent. The five pound chrome handle bars are fitted with a slip-resistant grip, and the bar itself provides ample space to ensure your hand or arm doesn't rub on the plates when lifting. The painted steel plates have a rounded design, giving a similar feel to standard dumbbells. A leveled edge prevents them from rolling if left on a flat surface. Included with the purchase is a heavy-duty nylon weight tray that conveniently houses the 'bells when not in use. (A cautionary note: Given the all-steel construction, you need to be careful if you're working out on a hardwood or tile floor - the flooring could be easily scratched from dropping the bells. If this is an issue, you are best off purchasing a rubber mat to cover the area that you train on.)
Changing the amount of weight couldn't be easier. The Versabell employs a quick select pin system: Simply turn the dials on the sides of each dumbbell to increase or decrease poundage. A magnified window displays the amount of weight you're using. The entire process takes all of about 20 seconds and you're ready to lift.
The weights are adjustable in 2.5 increments (5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25). When using the fractionated poundages (i.e. 7.5, 12.5, etc), one side of the dumbbell becomes heavier than the other by 2.5 pounds. This wasn't a major issue in performance during our tests, however, and even the most attentive lifter shouldn't note a perceived difference while lifting.
In sum, the Versa Bell is a terrific product for those who want to reduce clutter in their home gym. A set of two Versa Bells takes the place of eighteen separate dumbbells, making it a huge space saver. The product is well made, attractive and highly functional. No real negatives could be found. The product is also available in 12.5 and 50 pound versions. An attractive rack can be purchased separately if you prefer to keep the bells off the floor.
Highly recommended.
