Yohimbine
What it is: Yohimbine is the active chemical compound found in the herb, yohimbe, obtained from a type of evergreen tree grown in western Africa.
What it does: Yohimbine is used medically as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. More recently it has been promoted as a fat loss aid.
Verdict: There is fairly convincing research that yohimbine can accelerate fat burning. It acts as an alpha-2 antagonist. Why is this relevant? Well, alpha-2 receptors impair the breakdown of fat in fat cells. By blocking the ability of alpha-2 receptors to function, yohimbine can potentially facilitate increased fat breakdown (called lipolysis) and release of fatty acids from fat cells. This has led to speculation that yohimbine might be most effective when administered prior to exercise, since the body can use the increased circulating fatty acids for fuel. Pre-exercise yohimbine administration also has the potential to reduce activity of fat storing enzymes (i.e. lipoprotein lipase), which can further increase fat burning. Despite these attributes, however, yohimbine has significant potential side effects that might outweigh its benefits. These include rapid heart beat, high blood pressure and insomnia. Cases of panic attacks, headaches and dizziness have been reported, as well as the potential for more serious adverse consequences such as seizures and renal failure. Given the possible side effects, yohimbine should only be taken with the supervision of a physician. Absolute contraindications include those with existing liver, kidney or cardiovascular issues, as well as those suffering from psychiatric disorders.
